Spitters, from the Resistance
Spitters is a dramatic and layered musical theater piece rooted in true events and personal memories of World War II. The text poignantly tells the story of a young woman, Emma, who along with her husband Karel—a notary—tries to maintain their moral compass in a time of chaos, betrayal, and violence.
The performance alternates between intimate scenes filled with loss, doubt, and love, and heartbreaking confrontations with the reality of war and collaboration. The text moves between documentary and poetic language, leaving space for inner monologues, subdued dialogues, musical interludes, and group scenes. Music is an essential part of the narrative, connecting the personal with the historical.
The central motif is 'digging'—the quest for truth, justice, and humanity, both literally (in the fields, in archives) and figuratively (in one's own conscience).
This performance has an interval.
